Who We Are

Oaks Church Brooklyn is a non-denominational, Jesus-centered community at the intersection of the charismatic and contemplative, meaning we believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and we are rooted in the Scriptures of God.

The name of our church comes from Isaiah 61:1-3.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.

We believe we are a church planted in Brooklyn for the display of God's splendor. We want people to encounter the spirit of Christ in community, together displaying the glory of God for the good of our neighbors. The Good Way is how we order our common life to cultivate God’s splendor and Brooklyn’s flourishing.

Our rhythms are the essential ways we respond to the Gospel (Philippians 2:12), order our communal and individual lives to have intimacy with Jesus (John 15:1-8), and a framework for relating, supporting, and refining one another (Ephesians 4:1-3, Hebrews 10:23-24, Proverbs 27:17). These rhythms make up our conviction of The Good Way of Jesus, which include:

  • A Life Deeply Rooted in the Story of God

  • A Regular Rhythm of Sabbath Rest

  • A Life Marked by Simplicity and Generosity

  • Active Participation in the Family of Jesus

  • A Pursuit of Wholeness and Holiness

  • A Lifestyle of Missional Hospitality

  • A Pursuit of Justice and Peace in my Activities
